St. Martin of Tours has the distinction of being the second oldest Catholic church in McLennan County. The first settlers in this area came by wagon from Teutopolis, Illinois in 1872. Their Catholic faith gave them the strength to make this difficult journey and sustained them through many hardships. Having arrived on November 11, the Feast of St. Martin of Tours, they called the settlement Martinsville. Mass was frequently said by a circuit rider missionary in settlers’ homes until a permanent church could be completed. St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church continues to be a worshiping community which seeks to live its Catholic faith based on Christian values.
